I visited a choir class and saw a great use of youtube. The teacher told a story about terraced farming, a farming technique some students would have seen south of town. He related that to measures of songs that need to be sung at different volumes. He then showed a two minute clip off youtube of a choir singing the song that he was teaching with the terraced volumes.
This story reminds me of one of my older teachers sho pulled me aside one day and told me that the laptops, moodle and youtube allowed him to stay competitive in the MTV generation. The days of hour long videos are not gone, but their effectiveness has definitely been reduced over the years. Short clips with specific points bring video back into the classroom effectively.

jim, i read your whole blog and found it fascinating. i even clicked on some of your links; it boggles my brain. this is my question: how do we navigate all these waters? It seems to me that they are endless. I feel like kids might feel when they enter a music store: overwhelmed. there's so much to buy, so much to listen to--and the kid doesn't even know what genre he likes! where does one start, so that one can methodically do this thing called technology?
I am not sure there is a good answer to this question. I think it is a lot like life. We are going to muddle through it. And then one day we will take a moment to look back and see how far we have come.
That is in some strange way very comforting. i can do life, mostly... so maybe if i do technology as i should do life--one step at a time--with patience, fortitude, and baby steps--aha! therein may lie(s) the key(s).
